Create site navigation that will help your visitors to take an action

It is very important to plan your site navigation as studies have shown that you can expect anywhere from 30% to 60% of your visitors to drop off at each click!

This is why you should avoid adding unnecessary "layers" to your site as the further a visitor has to dig into your site, the less likely it is they will complete the action you want them to take.

Knowing that you will lose visitors with every "extra" click you ask them to take, you should minimize the number of clicks your visitors will have to make to accomplish the key goals on your site.

Visitors are impatient and are always one click away from leaving, so you cannot assume they will take any extra trouble to "find" your information or offer.

Any time you ask your visitors to click on a link, you risk losing them if they cannot find what they want. For example, do not ask your visitor to "click here" to go to your opt-in form for your newsletter on a separate page - instead of place the form itself on each page and make it one click less for your visitor and avoid risk of losing them.

It pays to spend some time to plan your navigation. Start by compiling a list of all the things your web site will include. Once you have the list, decide what the navigation of your homepage will look like.

Try sketching this out and see if you have problems moving from 1 page to the other. If you are struggling, so will your visitors.....

Navigation for sites that sell less than 10 products

If you are selling a single product, or just a few products, your navigation should be quite simple. A single product sold through a salesletter, for example, would require little more than links to the standard pages surfers expect (as mentioned in our last posting) and your order page.

A site selling only a handful of related products could easily feature them all on the main page, with links to details about each product on their own separate pages. This is much more direct than having a link that says "Products" and forcing the user to click one layer down to see them.

Navigation for sites that sell more than 10 products

If you are seling many products, it will be a good idea to group the products into categories. If you sell cameras, for instance, you can group them by the intended customer (professional photographers vs. amateurs) or by type (digital, instant, etc.).

Or you can add a search function to let customers look for specific items. Remember, you don't have to bury them down just because you cannot show all your products on your homepage.

What should your navigation appear and how it should look like?

This is where you will actually be better off NOT being original! There are a few basic rules you should follow to make your navigation effective.

1. Keep your navigation consistent Navigation bars on web sites should be consistent to be effective - the same size, color, and in the same place on every page of your site.

**The one time it can pay off to change your navigation bar is when the visitor has started an activity you don’t want to distract them from — like filling in your order form!
On these pages, it may make sense to just have a “home” link, or a “Continue Shopping” link in the case of a shopping cart, so visitors are not tempted to stray.

2. All of your navigation should appear in ONE place

Do not duplicate your navigation in two places on each page (such as top and bottom, or the left-hand side and bottom). This can actually end up confusing people, so it's better to save this space for important content.

3. Choosing where you'll place your main navigation

The two most common locations for navigation bars are horizontally along the top of the page (below the logo), or vertically along the left side of the page.

Do not put your navigation above your logo. People have gotten used to ignoring this area, since it is often the place where advertising banners are positioned.

4. Deciding what your navigation will look like

To avoid having dozens of links on your navigation bar, it is good practice to group complex sites into sections and leave only the main links visible. Show any more than about eight choices on your toolbar and you are likely to confuse visitors.

Here are several standard ways of showing the main sections of your site.

Using Tabs: Amazon.com has helped make tabs which mimic the tabs on file folders a common and easily recognized navigation tool to show major categories of a site. Click on a tab, and you wll "open up" a new section of the site. It is a very intuitive way to organize categories of products or content.

Using Drop-down menus: Another popular way of getting a lot of navigational information into a small place is to use drop-down menus (like the drop-down lists we're used to seeing in forms). All the links are visible to the user with a single click.

Using Roll-over menus: A newer way to organize a navigation bar is to use JavaScript to have key categories on your navigation bar open up into drop-down menus when the user places their cursor over them.
This is how the menus in most software programs work, so users are generally familiar with them. Because they rely on JavaScript, though, it's crucial that you test your pages in various browsers to make sure they work consistently.

5. Name your navigation links clearly

People should instantly know what to expect when they click on a link. Therefore, it is important to be to choose wording to use for your navigation that is descriptive.

There are some "standard" pages visitors expect to see, because they're now generally considered to be a "standard" part of every successful website. Some examples are:

1. Opt-in Offer

This is one of the very important element that all sites must have. Collecting visitors' e-mail addresses should be a top priority . Imagine that you have paid for advertisement to drive visitors to your site and if they are undecided to buy yet, would you let these targeted visitors slip away?

Your opt-in form should be on every page along with a compelling copy that gives visitors a powerful reason to share their contact information. This can be a targeted newsletter, free information, free gift (ebooks, reports), a survey or even a contest.

Having collected these e-mails will enable you to follow up on their visit and since they have opted in, you do not face prospect of being accused as a spammer. On this page, you can list the most common questions visitors tend to ask and provide the answers. This not only give your visitors the information they are looking for, it also help you to keep an archive of all your written replies to queries you have received.

You can always cut and paste to reply any queries you received (which you have answered in the past). Having FAQ also helps to reduce the amount of queries you need to reply as visitors can find the answers here. Hence, you slash your time spend to answer calls and/or e-mails from customers.

Many webmaster have now incorporate a forum as FAQ where more experienced user helps to provide answers on your behalf! You can check an example in Blogger Help.

5. Privacy Statement

With spamming fast becoming a problem, privacy on the Internet is a sensitive issue. You need to assure your visitors that you will respect their privacy (and you must adhere to it).

Your visitor need to feel at ease when you fill in your opt-in form or order form knowing that the information you collect will not be compromised.

Outline exactly what sort of information you collect from each visitor, what you do with it, who you share it with, whether you use cookies, etc.

6. Acceptable Use Policy (or Terms of Service)

7. Testimonials

This is a very important sales tool that you can't afford NOT to include on your site. Testimonials are the best way to show the value of what you offer, through the words of real customers who benefited from your products. However, never use any fake testimonials.

8. Shopping Cart

A shopping cart is necessary when your website offers multiple products. A shopping cart will allow your customer to collect various products from your site until they're ready to complete their purchase and “check out”. There are many commercial shopping cart and you can run a search in google to find them. However, you can also consider using Paypal as your shopping cart. If you want to design and build a website for your home based internet marketing business that will compel your visitors to subscribe, click and buy, you cannot afford to miss the step of planning.

The aim of planning is to develop a web site that is user-friendly and easily understood by your vistors. Your website have to look good but it is more important that they have to work! And therefore, planning your navigation and content is important.

P65 - Singapore Government using Blog to reach out to the young

12 young PAP Member of Parliment (MP) have launched a blog site http://www.P65.sg in an effort to stay in sync with Singapore's young.

These 12 MPs are all born after 1965 (thus P65) and have been tasked by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong with connecting better with Singapore's post-independence generation.

According to Mr Lim Wee Kiak (MP for Sembawang GRC), the aim of the blog is to link up with net-savvy youngsters who get the bulk of their information online, and who might prefer sharing their views here - as reported by the Straits Times on 05 Oct 2006.

Let's hope that the blog will enhance the communication between the younger MPs and the younger population.

Scam Alerts - Affiliates Posing as Merchants

There seems to be some affiliate who try to pass their site off as merchants. At such sites, they do have a product (perhaps a cheap e-book or report) to sell which qaulify them as merchants.

However, these sites make money strictly as affiliate site.

These sites are filled with affiliate links and Adsense and virtually no mention of their products except when you click on their "Affiliate Program" link.

Do not join such program as you will not get paid. WHY ?

Because they are just not selling "their product" but your affiliate links will drives traffic only to their homepage. When the traffic you send to their site do click on any of their affiliate links and buy, they get the commission. You get nothing !

Unless of course, the traffic you drive there happen to see the "Affiliate Program" link as well and buy that cheap e-book or report. Otherwsie, you are just sending free traffic for them to promote thier own affiliate links.

Why did these affiliate marketers do that ?

This is just a trick to give it more legitimacy and likelihood of higher rankings with Google.

Now you know that in some cases the “Affiliate Program” link is a scam.

Beware the scammers!

Don’t join their programs and warn other affiliates through forums and in your own blog.

Do not let such scammers damage the business of honest and serious marketers like us.

Broke, Desperate and at the End of Your Tether?

Have you been trying to start an Internet business and find yourself broke, desperate and coming to the end of your tether?

" ...I have bought so many books I have lost count and am now so totally confused (and broke) about what to do I'm just about to give up."

I struggle to get by with my current job as a bus boy and I am tired of living from paycheck to paycheck. I am currently out of school and wish to go back but I do not have the time nor the money. " ...I am a parent, divorced and am struggling to make ends meet. I cannot quit my job."

" ...I desperately need more income."

" ...bill collectors hounding..."

OK...I want you to pinch yourself to confirm that you're still among the living.

Where there's life, there's hope.

Now take a long, deep breath. Make that 10 deep breaths.

No, seriously. Close your eyes, breathe deeply and feel your body relax.

Relaxed? OK, here are some suggestions.

First of all, focusing on losses won't help you win. Let go of the past. What's done is done. Unless you can recoup some of your money, learn the lesson, chalk it up to experience and move on.

Next, work on building a mental image of yourself as an extraordinarily happy and successful Internet entrepeneur.

Trust me, this works.

Failing my first attempt at air traffic control training, I felt defeated, depressed and stupid. When given a second training opportunity, I was reluctant to try, fearful of failing again.

Then the little voice inside my head told me how much I really WANTED that job. I also wanted to prove that those who cast me aside the first time were wrong - that I COULD do that job.

But could I really?

It was time for some honest self-evaluation. What stumbling blocks had I put in my path? Was it lack of knowledge? Lack of effort? Not at all. I didn't honestly BELIEVE I could do it, AND I was intensely AFRAID of failing.

Yikes! What a great recipe for failure that was. I got exactly what I focused on most.

However, believing you can be successful at something when you've failed before is a bit of a trick.

It CAN be done, however. I adopted a 'B.S. baffles brains' or 'Fake it 'til you make it' approach. Every step of the way I asked myself what a REAL air traffic controller would do in that situation, and then did that. Even when I wasn't completely confident, I forced my voice to at least sound confident. I acted the part until it became my reality.

So how did REAL netpreneurs approach their business and become successful?

Well, because it's impossible to think clearly while worried about how to pay this month's rent, they didn't spend their last dime on an business opportunity.

If you're currently in serious debt, then consider talking to a financial planner to help rework your finances.

Leo Quinn's 'Own Your Own PayCheck Again' is a terrific resource for those who are serious about debt relief. He prescribes uncommon methods that I know from first-hand experience really work.

His book is a bit pricey, but it's a far better investment than buying an information manual that instructs you to go out and spend even more to build your business, when you don't have it to spend. Why not learn some techniques on how to pay off your debt quicker and keep a little more in your pocket?

If you can afford to pay the bills but not much else, focus your energy on saving and earning the amount you'll need to build your business without worry. Invest small amounts on things that will bring real returns in the short term.

For example, scour your basement and your friends' basements for things to sell on eBay. The insertion fee for items listed at less than a buck is 25 cents US. If the item sells for under 25 bucks, you'll pay a 5.25% 'final value fee' to eBay. Do that enough times and pretty soon you'll have five hundred or a thousand bucks to invest in your business... but only if you SAVE what you make.

Vist eBay now to see what's hot and selling.

Even if you have wads of cash, be realistic and informed about how you spend your money.

I've talked to far too many folks who invest in expensive coaching programs, believing that somehow their business will magically appear once they've completed the course.

In reality, whether you buy a $27.00 dollar, or a $5,000 Internet business coaching program, in most cases you're buying information on how to build a business, not a service that will do the work for you.

If that's what you want, then you may want to consider buying an existing business. However, it may be hard to find someone who has invested the time, effort and money to build a profitable online business, who is willing to sell. Basically, at that stage, the business should generate revenue automatically without a whole lot of input from the creator... so they'd be a little daft to sell, don't you think?

Do your due diligence. Read the fine print, ask questions and understand exactly what you're getting. And with regard to those coaching programs.... get a written contract, and search the forums for at least five people who have taken the program and were really happy with it... i.e. aren't just saying good things because they're trying to sell you the program through their link.

If you choose to go the information manual route, plan to follow ALL the instructions, or fail otherwise.

For everyone who ever told me "I bought this, that or the other book (or DVD, course, program, coaching package) and it didn't work", it was easy to prove that it wasn't the book that didn't work - it was THEY that didn't work.

We can't expect to be successful with ugly websites, little or poor content, not building a list or not building a relationship with our visitors and subscribers.

The truth of the matter is that there are no shortcuts.

Each and every step is essential, and every successful netpreneur has paid his or her dues to get to where they are today. They did their homework, made mistakes, and learned the lessons - always believing in their ability to succeed.

Starting an internet business is still easier, faster and less expensive (by far) than starting an offline business. If you want to do it bad enough, you WILL find a way to make it work.

Why Opt-in form is so important

This is a follow up on my previous post about e-mail marketing.

Studies have shown that almost nobody buy from any website on their first visit. It take about 7 contacts before any sales can be made.

So, if you are counting on hits to make a sales, you need to re-think your strategy.

The simplest way is to create an opt-in form to offer visitors a free newsletter or a free report etc... Make a compelling opt-in offer so that your visitors will leave you their first name and e-mail address.

This is so important for you to continue to contact them with your follow up e-mails (remember you need about 7 contacts before any sale can be made). Use these follow up to build up trust and relationship with your potential customers.

After any sales, use the follow up e-mails as a form of customer service / survey to find out if they are satisfied with your products. More importantly, you can start promoting your back-end products as a satisfied customer is likely to buy from you again and again.

So, how can you not start collect those e-mail addresses ?

At this point, you may wonder how you can manage with all those chores of collecting e-mail addresses, managing them, sending out th e-mail etc....

I agree that this is time consuming and tedious......you should be spending time building and growing your business and not working your business.

Email marketing - A good website promotional tool for internet marketing ?

A few days ago, I mentioned that this blog was suspected by Blogger as spam. Well, email marketing has experienced a lot of negative reviews due to spams over the past few years too. How many of us have not receive mails that we never wanted ?

The explosion of spam, and the sheer volume of email people received ruined the effectiveness of email as a marketing tool. Even perfectly legitimate emails were being trapped by spam filters or deleted, unopened, by wary recipients who were concerned about viruses.

Yet there are still companies that, despite these challenges, manage to generate millions of dollars of profit every year using email marketing software.

According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, email remains the number one online activity of Americans - ahead of Web surfing and using search engines - and now that more and more people are able to receive email on their cell phones and PDAs, the opportunities for creative email marketing are only continuing to expand.

At the recent MarketingSherpa Email Marketing Summit in Chicago, Barry Stamos of Responsys.com even stated that people now spend more time reading email than watching TV!

Therefore, Email marketing is still a good website promotional tool for internet marketing. If anyone tells you that email marketing is dead, think again.....

eMarketer reports that email generates a much higher return on spending than methods such as direct mail and newspaper and radio advertising.

The challange now is to educate yourself on the best ways to collect, manage, and store email addresses, and only send out relevant emails that people will open without hesitation. Do these things right and you'll be able to profit from all of the new opportunities available to email marketers... and continue to enjoy the impressive ROI email marketing provides.

A word of advice here is not to buy any email list and start mailing........you can get into serious trouble as any report of spam could result in your ISP shutting you down.

Start clutivating your own opt in list by writing an opt-in offer for your web site and started to collect the names and email addresses of visitors who want to hear from you on a regular basis. These are people who have decided they like what they see on your web site enough to give you their email addresses.They are basically inviting you to sell to them!

Then,

Manage your "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" requests
It is important that people who subscribe are added quickly to your list as one of these subscription requests may end up being your best customer.

At the same time, never hide your unsubsribe link and always treat requests to unsubscribefrom your list seriously. You can find yourself in trouble with your ISP if people who aren't promptly removed from your list can accuse you of spamming them.

Remove duplicate addresses
There will always be some people who will subscribe to your list, leave your site, and come back a couple of days later to sign up again, forgetting that they have already joined. So, before you send any mailings, you'll want to make sure that you don't have any duplicate email addresses in your list.

People who received multiple copies of the same mail from you will just get agitated and may prompt them to unsubscribe from your list or worse yet, report you as a spammer!

Keep your list clean !
Keeping your list clean means more than just removing unsubscribes and duplicate addresses. Do not forget to remove "bounce back" to you after a mailing. If you continue to send email to an address that is invalid, you may be mistaken to bea spammers, and you may end up with a problem with the ISP receiving the messages.

Divide your list to conquer more subscribers
Using email to target different segments of your audience is one of the single most effective ways to market products or services on the Internet. In fact, email marketers practicing segmentation are currently seeing much better results than those sending undifferentiated mailings.
You can segment your list into
(a) existing customers, or
(b) visitors to your site who have simply opted in to receive your free
newsletter, eBook, etc.

Catch your recipients' attention by using their names
With the massive emails that people are receiving, not all mails may get opened and read. If the people on your list know that the message you are sending is something they want, they will open it!

The "secret" to getting email recipients' attention is to personalize the subject line with the subscriber's name. Nothing gets a person's attention faster than hearing or seeing their own name!

Personalizing your subject lines, you also make your email appear more authentic and safer to open, because recipients will be more likely to view your email as coming from a trusted source.

Despite the obstacles presented by spam and volume, email marketing can still deliver an exceptional return on investment(ROI) because of the massive amount of time people spend online, and the proportion of that time they spend checking their email.

Google = to use google search engine to obtain information on the world wide web.

What has this got to do with internet marketing ?

Well, this is just to show that Google is a serach engine that you cannot afford to ignore.

I have not been blogging the past few days because this blog was suspected by Blogger to be a spam blog ! I received a mail this morning from Blogger that they have checked and cleared my blog as a non spam blog.

I was not unhappy because I knew that I do no spam. In fact, I am happy that Blogger is doing that as this will reduce the spam blogs out there. I am sure that most of you out there hate sapm. I take this opportunity to stress again that spam is hurting serious internet marketing business.

How I started my home based internet marketing business

The world is getting smaller with the explosion of the internet. Since 2000, I have been looking into starting a business on the internet.

Is that possible ?

What about the scams and dot com bubble burst ?

As a complete computer dummy, I have no where to turn to to start my business. Many times, I have been put off by the cost of getting someone to build a website etc.... and how about what to sell on line ? I have no idea what I can sell on line to make money although friends have said that you can sell anything.

Is a home based internet marketing business all about putting up a website and start business ?

I prefer to do some research on the internet and I am even more confused after that. There are many home based business opportunities available - some will tell you that you need not do anything and even website is done for you - FREE !

I am glad that I stumbled across Corey Rudl - the legendary internet marketing guru (for those who do not know who is Corey - he is the founder of Internet Marketing Center and author of the Insiders Secret to Marketing Your Business On The Internet which is the best selling guide to starting your internet business.

I stayed on his mailing list for 4 years reading all his newsletter and wondering if what he said is too good to be true.

Finally, in end 2004/early 2005, I took action and enrolled in IMC's Advance Mentoring Program.

Thus, my journey for my home based internet marketing business begins.....
